i just moved here a few weeks ago from lexington. i
know that i have missed a few meetings and all but i
have been in the process of establishing a life and a
job and a routine here in louisville... its been a
little hard for me to make every meeting so far due to
that... im not gonna address the aron/kristen
situation, its not my place, jsut as it probably wasnt
his to address such personal issues over a community
list... but anyway what i will address is why i chose
to participate in the brickhouse to begin with. i used
to frequent the old brycc house. some of my fondest
memories in life involve it. it was amazing, and
taught so many people so much. i know the focus on
community projects was sort of lost due to the
constant need ot facilitate shows in order to pay the
bills.. but even with that said it had such an amazing
impact on this community and this entire region from
ohio to indianapolis to tennessee and even eastern ky
and the rest of appalachia. not to even touch on all
the travelers from farther away who past through to
see bands or participate in workshops etc... my
experience so far at the new brickhouse has been sort
of a letdown due to the turmoil in both the building
and the "staff"
it seems as though the people involved in radio refuse
to recognise their commitment to and identity as part
of the brickhouse. brick radio is NOT its own entity
in entirety. i feel like anyone who wants to be
involved in one "collective" and shuck all
responsibility to the whole does not belong. i
understand that those interested in bikes, or
gardening, or shows, or radio might not care about the
community center as a whole, but it would not hurt to
participate in things needed to keep the whole that
shelters your own and all the other collectives going,
like general maintenance, fund raising, chores etc. it
would sem to me if your interest begins and ends with
a particular collective jsut the simple fact that the
brickhouse as a whole being the vehicle that makes
your participation in that collective possible would
motivate you to at least care a little.
as far as financial issues go i want to address the
radio paying the way for brickhouse issue. i do not
think it is the place of radio to totally foot the
bill for the brickhouse. i do think it is radio's
place to help out if possible with the agreement that
said help should be returned when possible. more than
anything else we need to be taught to fish not given a
fish. if the radio people want to end the issues, then
in addition to help as a loan, how about help with
fundraising ideas that dont cost money. lets beat the
streets, flier and do anything else we can to get
money so that the entire brickhouse doesnt go under
taking everything including radio with it.
i have a sneaking suspision(sp?) that there is some
wink wink nudge nudge good ole boy club stuff going
on, my fear of this is not as strong as others' cause
i give people the benefit of the doubt, but due to
some things ive seen and heard first hand i fear that
there is some concious if not purposeful action being
taken to set brick radio up to be able to continue IF
the brickhosue doesnt. when participating in something
like this, you cant just take things with you. it
doesnt work that way. if that is the motivation it is
deplorable and undermines the whole spirit of
brickhouse, brickradio, and any other community based
organization or non profit. if your interests in brick
radio are for personal gain, ego, or whatever else
would provoke such an attitude then you need to go
work for clearchannel. do not replicate the outside
capitalist empirial world within what could be such a
wonderful community project. if you want to do a
community radio without involvement in the brickhouse
then GO FOR IT. if you want to be involved in the
community radio that is part of the brickhouse then
get your shit straight.
also due to what i mentioned above the overwhelming
representation of strong radio interests in the
brickhouse board of directors is a little
disconcerting. if you are on the board of directors,
but approach that role with brickradio's best interest
in mind as opposed to the brickhouse's best interest
in mind then you do not qualify for or deserve your
position on the board and should immediately step
down.
i know im the new guy, and i dont mean to offend. i
just dont want to see one of the things that i was
most excited about in louisville go to shit because of
some people being sketchy and dishonest about their
intentions and not owning up to the inherent
committment their chosen activities neccessitate.
as a last note i think i know where aron is coming
from and must say that i agree about the marketing/pr
issue. there is more in town than the
punk/HC/indie/arts community, but that community is
most likely where brickradio would find the most
support appreciation and adoration.
