From wxbh-announce at wxbh.org Sat Oct 25 05:12:00 2008 From: wxbh-announce at wxbh.org (wxbh-announce@wxbh.org) Date: Sat Oct 25 05:13:35 2008 Subject: [WXBH-Announce] Radio planning meeting today at Heine Bros. Gardiner Lane Message-ID: <4902E2E0.6090900@brickhouse.cc> *Help build a community radio station for Southeastern Jefferson County!* You're invited to a planning meeting for WXBH Radio this afternoon (Saturday) at 4 pm at Heine Bros. Coffee Shop, Gardiner Lane Shopping Center. If you're excited by the potential for local community media (and especially if you live or work or have ties to Southeastern Jefferson County), please attend. (WXBH has an FCC permit to build a low-power FM station that only covers Southeastern Jefferson County, so it's important that the station be run by people within its coverage area, e.g. Buechel, Fern Creek, Newburg, Okolona, and surrounding areas: Hikes Point, Outer Highlands, Camp Taylor, etc.) Meeting goals and tentative agenda: * Getting to know each other (i.e. team building). * Quick history of how the station got to be where it is. (We are currently streaming on the Internet but are not broadcasting on the air.) Background on our parent organization, the Brick House, and what it stands for. * Discussion of the potential for the relatively new LPFM model (based on the state of the radio industry, state of the nation, state of the local community, state of the station.) The challenge and potential rewards that lie ahead as we build a whole new type of radio station. Implications of this on the type of programming we should strive for. * Immediate goal: Finding and securing a location for our antenna and transmitter and getting back on the air. (We'll present the parameters and steps required.) * (Important goal: Transferring "effective operational authority" to people in the station's broadcast coverage area: Southeastern Jefferson County.) * Explanation of current station operating system (largely Linux shell scripts) and discussion of how it should be improved. * Devise a strategy to recruit more local people into the project. Discussion of skills we should target. * Project planning: construction, training, programming, promotion, underwriting, fund-raising, administration and governance. * Where to go from here: assignments, next meeting, provision for interim (online/telephone) communication and collaboration Bring your laptops. We should be able to stream the station, manipulate the schedule, monitor the listener log, and update the web site. If we like, we can even do a live origination from Heine Bros.! Please invite anyone you know who might have an interest in building a community-based radio station in Southeastern Jefferson County. (Heine Bros. Coffee is at the far end of Gardiner Lane Shopping Center [alongside Gardiner Lane]. The shopping center is on Bardstown Road, just in toward town from the Watterson Expressway.) Questions?
